“Green” Toothbrushes
About two years ago, I got really disgusted with myself for throwing my children’s toothbrushes out every three months or so. Combined with mine, it was four at a time. I was taking my dog Pepper to get acupuncture for his arthritis, at the time, and every Saturday after his vet appointment, I would stop at a health food store on my way home. After having the realization of what all those toothbrushes must be doing to the landfills, I checked out the health food store’s hygiene section to see if there was a reasonable solution. And of course there was. They had environmentally friendly, “green” toothbrushes with replaceable heads and even made them for children. So not only do you save a ton of money by not having to replace toothbrushes, I believe it makes a pretty substantial environmental impact as well. I would also like to add that I had tried the automatic toothbrushes, and really didn’t like them that much. I found I would use it for a few days then go back to my regular toothbrush, use it for a few days, regular toothbrush, etc. until I gave up on it all together.

I only use soft toothbrushes. In my twenties I thought I was supposed to brush with hard bristled toothbrushes and use a lot of pressure. I wound up giving myself receding gums. So please, remember to use soft brushes with circular strokes or an up and down motion, side to side tears up your gums.

Some interesting information regarding toothbrushes with some other options from Natural Health magazine July/August 2007.
“If every American changes toothbrushes every three months, as dentists recommend, that adds up to almost 100 million pounds dumped into landfills.”
“Designed by dentists, the Recycline Preserve toothbrush has a handle made from recycled Stonyfield Yogurt cups. When the brush wears out you can send it back to the company in Massachusetts, where it’s reprocessed into source material for plastic lumber.”
“Radius, a company founded on Tortola in the British Virgin Islands, offers several stylish, architect-designed, recyclable toothbrushes made from sustainable natural cellulose. The battery-powered electric Intelligent toothbrush uses replaceable heads, and Radius will take back the handle for recycling once the battery dies (usually after about 18 months-a red light in the handle will tell you).”

Even the little things like a “green” toothbrush, can make a big difference.
