Global Warming and National Security

General Information, Musings

climatechange.jpegI don’t watch TV much, but last night I found myself watching the world news. I was very disturbed by what was on, and although reports of all the terrible effects of global warming seem to be on mainstream television, I feel as if no one is listening. One of the topics was about the devastating effect global warming has had on our national security, and reports by twelve generals (I believe the report said most of them were retired, I’m trying to find the actual report through ABC), were all in agreement, that it was only going to get worse. Did you know that Somalia and the US’ involvement there had to do with global warming? I did not. Apparently, the terrible drought there was a consequence of global warming, and people became desperate. War lords took advantage of a volatile situation, send in the US troops, and Voila! We get to watch one of the tragedies unfold in the movie Black Hawk Down.

Indonesia just experienced terrible flooding. Millions of people have been displaced (the number was likened to half the population of the US) to the area the size of Iowa. More droughts, flooding, and extreme storms are being forecast, and when third world countries are hit, and people are desperate to feed themselves, their children, and to just survive, it becomes a breeding ground for terrorists. Who do you think is going to go to their aid? Most likely the US troops.

I would think that anybody in the military, who is married to someone in the military, who has a child in the military, who knows someone they love that’s in the military would be living the greenest lifestyle possible.

I would like to think that every person who supports the US troops would do whatever they could to prevent a catastrophe, and do some small, conscious act to be a little “greener.”

I would love to think that anyone with a child would do everything in their power possible to live the most conscious, organic, green lifestyle in the hopes that one day their child or children can have children of their own, and an Earth to procreate on.

If you think I am being a little gloom and doom, it’s because I am. Why? Every little conscious act makes a difference. You can do something, no matter how little money you have, no matter how much you think your child HAS to have something, no matter how unwilling you are to give up something in your life, there is always one little thing you can do that can make a HUGE difference. I don’t know what that one thing is, but with a little effort, it can be found.

I hope you take the time to read some of these stories. They are very eye opening.
